Ultra Rare Red on Red 1967 Corvette L88 sells for record price in Scottsdale

This year's auction in Scottsdale seemed to hold a lot of surprises as the auction block receives a fair amount of work this year. One of the biggest surprises was the record amount a 1967 Corvette L88 sold for, 3.5 Million. Ironically with most of the attention on the Bugatti owed by Simon Cowell  slated to cross the block was expected fetch a hefty price. Being only 20 in the World did help the bidding on the Corvette L88. A beautiful vehicle, pure eye candy. Colored in a perfect Red the L88 sat on the block as bids swooped in from all over the world. I sat and watched in awe as the price climbed at a steady rate. The hammer slammed at 3.5 and the new owner could have looked happier. this was one of the most sought after vehicles on the planet and now he had it!
After the smoke cleared it was determined (loosely) that buyers shelled out $248.6 million. With an average per vehicle selling price of $107,096. Almost a Billion dollars was spent this weekend in Scottsdale. A great investment on rare, classic collectibles vehicles that will only increase in value as time goes on.
This years record sale in Scottsdale actually wasn't the L88 Corvette. I would say the recession is over when the vehicle that sold for 3.5 was not the highest selling vehicle. Although the 3.5 set a record for the L88 Corvette it wasn't the most expensive purchase of the weekend. L88 Corvette did fetch an unheard of sum (for Corvettes at least) The most expensive of them all was a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT California long-wheelbase Spyder that the ultra-prestigious auction house RM Auctions sold for $8.8 million. The auction house says it believes the tally is a Scottsdale record.
At any rate the entire Barrett-Jackson week was full of excitement and always lived up to the hype. The cars were even more exotic it seems than the year before. With the Customs category rendering some true works of art for auction.  As always the cars we drove seem to always put us back to where we once were in a life we now call the past. Hopefully we will get the same treat again next year when the auction returns.
